2 Years, BREED MIX: Lab Mix GENDER: Male APPROX. AGE: 2 years old SIZE/WEIGHT: Medium, 55 lbs HISTORY/BACKGROUND: Roo was likely born to a reserve dog and ended up being found and taken to a nearby Albertan Shelter. After Roo was adopted from a shelter when a puppy, he started nipping, as puppies do. The owner didn't know how to handle nipping, so returned him. A year later, he was still at the shelter! He was then transferred to another shelter hoping to get more exposure so someone could see what a great boy he is, but he didn't do well in a cage since he had too much energy. He then got adopted, however, at this point he didn't have any experience with small dogs and saw some as prey, hence, he's not a dog that can go to dog parks. So, we are looking for an adopter that isn't into parks or off-leash hiking. Roo is well trained compared to most dogs coming in, however, he needs continual guidance and is not good with recall. BEST MATCH: Roo is best with an experienced dog owner. He is very smart and learns fast, so needs someone to continue training him, getting him exercised jogging, on a bike on leash (experienced and confident bike rider) and has no interest in visiting off leash dog parks. We think Roo would be best with a responsible couple or single person that can continue his socialization him. Roo would do well in an apartment or condo, unlike some dogs. As far as we know, he is not a barker. If he gets exercise he is calm and can stay home when owner at work. Roo has been with cats inside, but we would not trust him outside off leash around them, so a no-cat household is best.) Roo is best in a home without children since he needs adopter's extra time for training, walking and jogging, and a less excitable household. INFORMATION GIVEN TO US FROM THE SHELTER HE CAME FROM: Roo does great on walks and is an amazing dog to train. When he was in a foster home, he was able to learn to do basic commands very easily. He is very willing to please whoever is training him. As most labs are, he is quite energetic, and long walks with training get him paying attention. When he is in a home environment he does well. He loves to cuddle and loves being petted. He is house trained, doesn't chew on things he isn't supposed to and is well mannered when calm. He just follows you around like a lost puppy. In his foster home, he was exposed to a small cat. At first he tried to chase the cat around, however with the proper guidance and training, he learned to respect the cat and just tried to sniff her at times (they even tried to play a few times). He had no problems with the kids as they were calm, all he did was go sit next to them to get petted (it was ALWAYS supervised). I think his previous home was just a little too chaotic with no boundaries or guidance for him. He is also crate trained, and understands to go to his crate when asked, as it's his safe place. Roo greets new people with a lot of energy and sometimes is unsure of some people and needs a bit of time to trust them. He will shake a paw for treats, sits and stays with a release command before he eats his food. He seems to do great with people who are experienced in handling dogs. Often he comes when called, other times he wants to run and investigate. FAVORITE THINGS: Going to runs, for car rides, and getting one on one training. (403) 818-0703
