4 Years, BREED MIX: Husky/Malamute mix GENDER: Male APPROX. AGE: Approx 4 years old SIZE & WEIGHT: Large, 70 lbs HISTORY/BACKGROUND: Lived with family in the far north of Alberta and then taken to an animal shelter. TEMPERAMENT & PERSONALITY: Shredder is exceedingly smart, has prey drive, is loyal, and very active. He has a very affectionate side and eager to have a leader to please. After 4-5 days he will settle in with his people and slowly begin to open up to having his own safe space in the house. He still needs work and training on giving boundaries and leaving people with personal space. He is loyal/attached to his person and this requires much patience and diligence to discontinue. He is very smart and will learn quickly, but it is best to take some distance from other dogs for the first while as he does need more socializing, and will attempt to go after the other dogs. He is strong. DOG'S NEEDS: A strong leader, firm commands, home with no children or other pets, and a big fenced yard. Shredder is definitely a daytime outdoor dog, he loves to sleep between the sunshine and shade, and to roll around in the grass having a good back scratch. Shredder does have some attachment/attention seeking behaviour which is quite relentless and he does demonstrate some mouthing for attention. This will quickly subside with proper reactions and basic training. We recommend clicker training. BEST MATCH: Single or couple without children who are very active and have large fenced yard. While Shredder is always happy to go for walks (especially in the evenings when he has lots of energy and we recommend treadmill running in-between outdoor running excursions. Adopter needs patience and consistency on his leash walking, mainly, learning how to train a dog to walk "loose leash" and paying attention to his leader. He needs running on a treadmill or jogging with him prior to walking. He is the ideal dog for strong-minded, confident, leaders-type, active adopter who can provide him with socialization, mountain adventures and a properly fenced yard with no children, no cats or small dogs (including neighbours with small dogs or cats). He likes to run aside snowmobiles and go quite a distance without any problem (and likes to get a ride on a sled on the way back!
