13 Years, NAME: Slim BREED MIX: Pitbull/Dalmatian GENDER: Male APPROX. AGE: 13 years old SIZE: Medium HISTORY/BACKGROUND: Slim was rescued from a flooded house home and bathroom in the 9th Ward of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. At almost a year old he was placed in an upper level bathroom for safety of on oncoming hurricane. No one knew the flood was to follow. He survived nearly two months before being rescued by one of our team members, after swimming and standing on a bathroom sink and living in darkness. One year after rescue he was in a Texas shelter where his owners never came for him and one of his rescuer team of three ladies found out and had him flown to the original rescuer in Calgary. He's lived in a home environment since he arrived. TEMPERAMENT & PERSONALITY: Slim is a pitbull mix, and common with this breed, their genetics can be aggressive. This is the case with Slim, he's not all out aggressive, he is food aggressive and leary towards strangers and can bite an intruder, even if the intruder isn't a burgler but someone invited into the home when owners are not home. Slim is not the highly aggressive pitbull type, he is one that cannot be trusted when removing or giving food if he is in his crate. He is crate trained, but also well mannered and trained. He is a great companion and loving, but can be defensive and reactive, especially towards other reactive dogs, hence, he cannot be around other dogs without a muzzle, which he wears on walks, pack playtime, and dog parks. It's best to be safe. It works. He is not a good pet for most people, but we feel he may be able to find the right one. He has mellowed in his old age, and you would never guess he was 13!! He has gotten a bit hard of hearing lately, but other than that, he's healthy and happy. He's good with cats. His personality means he should be in a quiet atmosphere so not to trigger anxiety or excitement. Terrier's are known to get excited easily, and Slim is a perfect example. SPECIALITY: Slim lost his calling, he could have been an exceptional Search & Rescue dog. Never have we had a dog that had a nose that could find things, or the tenacity. He has an amazing sniffer! He still could do S & R, his sense of smell is still highly evolved, highly exceptional. BEST MATCH: Slim needs an adopter who is mellow, non forceful, can read dog body posture, understand Slim isn't the average pet to go places but enjoys relaxing around the house. Walks on leash are good as long as you use good leash techniques and not allow pulling and fine with a muzzle (meaning, adopter doesn't feel intimidated by what other people think if their pet wears a muzzle). Slim can be on his own for much of the day and the backyard, but likes being in the house on his dog bed the best. He needs a mature and responsible owner that understands basic dog behaviour. He obviously is a good watch dog, but he is also a companion dog, just not one for the majority of pet adopters. FAVORITE THINGS: Belly rubs, eating good food (meaning, not kibble), sweet talk, playing ball with you, hanging out watching tv, laying in the sunshine.
